Let The Season Commence…

It’s been a long winter, but it’s great to be able to say – our season starts THIS month! Yes, the first Gents Open is on the 26th and the Ladies Open on the 27th March.

We really are looking forward to golf getting underway again. The course will be in great shape and we are ready to welcome members and visitors alike to Portpatrick Dunskey.

Portpatrick Dunskey – Open for Golf

Believe it or not, we have had no snow in this wee corner and the course remains open for golf – yes, winter greens for the next few days – but the golf course is completely green!! I am looking out over the Irish coast  and the Mountains of Mourne are a superb sight and there goes a Stena ferry up Belfast Lough! The whole place looks spectacular so my suggestion is to get yourselves down here and enjoy some golf if your own course is snowbound. We look forward to welcoming you.

Fundraising for “Save the Children”

We are delighted to say that we have just won the Best Fundraising Golf Club 2010 Award for Save the Children Fund!

Our prize is to have a watercolour painted by Tranent artist Alasdair Stroyan, well known for his golf and cricket paintings. This will be displayed in the clubhouse in due course and we look forward to seeing the finished article!

Our thanks to all those who were involved in the fundraising including our Ladies section and those golfers who took part in the Molly Campbell Mixed Open earlier in the year.

Members & Visitors – Monday 12th July 2010

Due to some essential work being carried out within the kitchen on the 12th July, only soup and filled rolls (cold) will be available in the clubhouse during the day.

Hopefully, normal service will be resumed in time for the juniors in the evening!

Dunskey welcomes the BLHGA

For those asking – what on earth is the BLHGA – I can tell you that they are the British Left Handed Golfers’ Association, who celebrated their 26th  year of visiting Portpatrick!

We always look forward to their visit and the booking is already in the system for 2011!

The arrangements are of military style (with great humour thrown in!) and the general conviviality within the clubhouse for some 3 days, is second to none!

The Dunskey invited guests would like to say a big thank you for their invitation to dinner on the Saturday evening – the Pirate sketch was brilliant!!!

Good Greenkeeping Practices at Dunskey

We are very pleased to say that we were selected for inclusion within the SGU website for case studies on Good Greenkeeping Practices.

This is a real feather in the cap for the Club and we really appreciate the time spent on the visit and the preparation of the report.

Great credit goes to committee in years gone by to go down the STRI route and to the greens committee, Head Greenkeeper Alan McWilliam and his team for the fantastic work carried out on the golf course.

AGM 2010

Many congratulations to Alister McColm (Gents Captain) and Agnes Gardner (Ladies Captain) on taking up their new appointments for this year.

Professional Shop returns to Dunskey

We are delighted to announce that James Erskine, PGA Professional, will be re-opening the Pro shop in early April 2010.

Not only will James be stocking all the golfing requirements from tees and golfballs to an excellent range of clothing, but he will be carrying a range of Portpatrick Dunskey logo gear as well!

The Club takes the opportunity of wishing James great success in this venture.

Please remember that he is also available for coaching lessons throughout the year.

Defibrillator at Dunskey

Thanks to funds raised by the Super Seniors here at the Club, we are the proud owners of a new defibrillator machine.

Our hope is that it is never needed and that it remains in its swish red case at the front office!

The staff including admin, catering and greenkeepers attended a recent training session with paramedic Derek Ritchie in the fundementals of CPR and use of the defibrillator itself.

Thanks to Derek for his time and very informative training.

I think everyone learned from the session.
